Will Real Madrid make a marquee signing this summer?
With Cristiano Ronaldo rumoured to be on his way from Real Madrid to Juventus this summer, Los Blancos are being tipped to make a big-name signing in response. Real have been linked with Paris Saint-Germain duo Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, in addition to Bayern Munich centre-forward Robert Lewandowski. Losing Ronaldo would be a big blow to their hopes of success next season and would lead to a negative response from supporters. Real would have to act fast to sign a worthy replacement as they have looked very ordinary at times without the Portuguese international in attack. Real’s loss would certainly be Juve’s gain, but how do the Spanish giants go about replacing such a legend?
Signing Neymar would certainly be a start, although him having spent a number of years at Barcelona would likely go against him in supporters’ eyes. He’s nevertheless a world-class player and one who could replicate the amount of goals and assists Ronaldo made in his nine years at the club.
The 26-year-old scored and created 182 goals in 186 games in his four years at the Camp Nou, winning two Liga titles, three Copa Del Rey titles and one Champions League. At Paris Saint-Germain, Neymar contributed 44 goals in 30 games before picking up a season-ending injury.
He’s impressed for Brazil at the 2018 World Cup and would surely be the best successor to Ronaldo that money can buy. The attacker won’t come cheap, however, as Paris Saint-Germain paid £200m to procure his signature from Barcelona 12 months ago and have no reason to sell him so soon.
Neymar could soon become the best player in the world. He’s breathing down the shoulders of Lionel Messi and Ronaldo and still has many more years in his career to improve. Real have wanted him for many years, but they also have a plan b option if they’re unsuccessful in the pursuit – Mbappe.
The former Monaco forward completed a £160m deal to join PSG last summer, but Real have been looking to bring him to the Bernabéu. Los Blancos issued a statement denying they had agreed a deal for the 19-year-old, but they are believed to be keen on his signature.
Mbappe scored and created 43 goals in 60 games at Monaco, winning the Ligue 1 title before completing his move to PSG where he’s gone on to contribute 37 goals in 44 games, winning the Ligue 1 title, Coup de France and Coup de la Ligue in his debut season at the Parc des Princes.
Both players would be world class forwards at Real Madrid and would go someway to replacing Ronaldo if Juventus do agree a deal for the club legend this summer.
