Real Madrid added James Rodriguez to its roster after the 2014 World Cup. It was the last major payout by the club for a player. He was the top scorer of the previous World Cup and Real Madrid had to get him at any cost. Four years later the club’s player signing strategy may be changing.
At the presentation for the club’s newest signing, Vinicius, Florentino Perez spoke about how transfer fees have gotten out of control and from his words we can infer that Real Madrid is not going to pay outrageous fees for players. With Neymar and Mbappe out of the question the club has no intention of over-paying for Hazard, Icardi or any other top players. The club’s new philosophy is to bring players to improve the group when possible or sign young talent with huge future potential. No more franchise players will be brought in to build the team around.
Florentino: “We know that the international football scene has been radically transformed and we need to adapt to this new reality. We cannot forget the importance of our youth teams for our club, they are key to our club’s identity. A few days ago I mentioned that we were going to improve the team with magnificent players and that’s what we’re doing. Odriozola and Vinicius both fall into this category. We’re going to bet firmly on young talented players who look to become the world’s best. For this reason we have doubled our efforts to find the best young talents.”
